Monday, June 9th 2014

I'm joining Tamar's The Good. The Random. The Fun. on this rainy Monday morning.

Signs of Summer surround me....finally!  I could do without the dreaded humidity, but I am enjoying the sunshine. On my local outings this week, I've discovered...

The Good

The Random
The surest sign of Summer!  Beer assortment which includes my Summertime favorite: Hell or High Watermelon.  This was discovered on an "outing" to my basement. My hubby DOES enjoy beer shopping!

Better than Jammies!

In case you don't know me, I am tall. I'm not REALLY tall...I mean...I have several friends who are taller than me.  5 '8 1/2" in stocking feet.  Pants shopping is a nightmare because, well....according to my husband and offspring...I have freakishly long arms and legs.  Why can men go into a store, choose their waist and inseam and walk out with a pair of pants that fit?  I have many pants that I pretend were meant to be "ankle length"...a more fashionable term than the "floods" from my younger years.

Along comes the maxi skirt trend.  I found one that had enough yardage and  have since been searching every store I enter desperate to find another that is long enough.  What could possible be more comfortable?  Seriously....they're better than pajamas, and much more attractive!

What's a girl to do?!  Google to the rescue!  I googled "easy maxi skirt" and I was introduced to Big Boo Little Boo.  She has a tutorial that is so easy that even a mediocre seamstress like I can follow.  Check out her Easiest Jersey Maxi Skirt tutorial and give it a go!
(Pardon the poor quality photo, but I was in a hurry to go out and buy more fabric)
Linking up to Sew Many Ways.  Hop on over and check out some REAL  sewing!

May 28, 2014

It's hard to believe that we are already into Week 21 of the CameraShy Take52 Photography Challenge.  One of the challenges for me is finding new things photograph!  For this week's challenge word of "FLASH" I decided to head to the race track.

I feel bad for Heavenly Girl.  Come on...it's right after a holiday weekend.  Her jockey over-indulged and she takes the blame.  We've all been there Heavenly Girl!
In a FLASH....They're out of the gate!
Intensity, Power, Speed
Here comes Gift Wrap literally flying to catch the pack...
And they're in the homestretch.....
Poor Heavenly Girl was nosed out by the winner, Perfect Jewel, and by Louder Than Sound.
Don't horses have the best names?!

Thanks for stopping by!  Feel free to leave a comment so I know you were here :)

CameraShy ~ Week 20

Random thoughts.....As I sit here on the absolutely beautiful Sunday morning in the middle of a holiday weekend, I can't help but reflect on why I am able to enjoy my life.  I am blessed to be sitting here in my home....safe, comfortable, and happy....thanks to those who have fought for our freedom here in the good ole U.S.A.

So, here is my Random  photo for the week.  After church, I drove to a local cemetery to thank those soldiers who fought for our freedoms.  Happy Memorial Day!

CameraShy - Week 19

pure  adjective purer, purest.

Why is it that such a simple word can cause my brain to cease working? Do you have that problem?  The harder you TRY, the harder it is to accomplish a task? I finally gave up my search for a photo for the word "pure" and just went out to relax with my camera.

If you ever see my home, the first thing you would notice is that I do NOT have a green thumb. I love flowers, but they do not love me.

"Pure Shock"

Imagine my surprise to find my azaleas blooming way back in my yard.

CameraShy Week 18 - "Down"

I was lucky enough to head "down" to Washington D.C. for a quick trip.  Amazingly, the weather was gorgeous.  My only companion for sightseeing was my reliable friend....my camera.  I brought one lens....my new 50mm....so that I could practice and learn.  What a perfect place for lessons.

For those of you who have been to this beautiful city, you know how much there is to see.  I walked and walked and walked....but I am always drawn to the National Mall and the many war memorials.  Too many wars commemorated by stunning, emotional memorials.

"Reflections"

"Down"
Vietnam Women's Memorial

I was alone at this memorial so it was the first time I got to spend time thoroughly experiencing this sculpture.  It's so moving...the peace on the nurse's face...the strength given by her comrades by a simple hand on her arm....the compassion in their eyes.

(Of my 300+ photos, I chose this one for "down" for so many reasons.  The nurse looking down into the soldier's face.  Strength coming down from another woman. The angle of this photo, shot while down on my knees.)

As my day ended and I strolled back through the many memorials, the sun started to set. I turned at the base of the Washington Memorial and was blessed with a gorgeous sunset.  This was the perfect end to a perfect day of appreciating all that I have...because of those brave men and women who fought for my freedom.

O Spring, Spring! Wherefore art thou?

I'm very confused.  I vaguely remember hearing that Spring had sprung.  The calendar says it's April, which should mean it's Spring.  The Spring Equinox has passed.  Yet I sit here clinging to a cup of hot coffee with a fleece blanket wrapped around me enjoying what heat I can find.  The cold, rain is pounding on my windows....again.  They world outside looks like a watercolor where the artist over mixed all of the pretty colors and the result is a color that Crayola would probably call "Muck".  Today is a perfect day for Black & White Wednesday....because my Wednesday is illustrated in Black & White.

Luckily, I was able to photograph a rare Spring day when the flowers were still on the branches and not laying, trampled, on the ground.
That's the joy of photography...Even when we can't remember things that happened, we have proof that they did.

Hoping the sun is shining wherever you are!

CameraShy Week 17

This week's prompt ~ Markings

I decided to combine two activities that keep me from doing what I should be doing hobbies...Photography and Reading.  It's another rainy day here.  I need a break from shopping, as says my bank account.  Where else to go but to the library?!

After buying a few books from the "book sale" section (hey...they were a bargain!)  I found myself in the non-fiction section surrounded by photography books with the "markings" of the Dewey Decimal System.

Note - DSL cameras can sound quite loud in the silence of a library.  I got quite a few stares :)

CameraShy Take 52 - Week 16

And this week's challenge is Formless. Formless?!

The positive of this challenge is that it makes me go out and practice.  Believe me when I say that I "practiced" a LOT for this particular challenge.  I have many, many photos which were intended to represent "formless" but ended up too formed.  Creative thinking is not my forte.  I tend to over-think.

I, finally, picked this photo as a homage to Spring. (formless - clouds, formless - sunshine, and not captured in this photo is formless - wind!)  My allergies are protesting.

Here Comes the Sun
"Here comes the sun, here comes the sun
And I say it's all right.
Little darling, it's been a long cold lonely winter.
Little darling, it feels like years since it's been here.
Here comes the sun, here comes the sun
And I say it's all right..."

CameraShy - Week 15

Week 15 of the Take 52 Challenge for CameraShy brings us....."Classic".  So many options, but this one immediately jumped into my head!

This past weekend was spent with friends I met my freshman year of college. I hate to admit it, but that is almost 35 years ago.  One of my "youthful" friends shared with me that she recently purchased Converse All-Stars...."Chucks" as we called them growing up.

Her college-age daughter's response was, "You must be having a mid-life crisis!"  SERIOUSLY?!  Do you think you invented these shoes?

Tell that to my dad! Look closely....you can see those famous stars on the side of his sneakers.  Clearly, this is not a recent picture. And clearly, the above shoes are not shoes my dear old Dad would have worn.
Some points of interest for the youngsters who think they discovered this footwear:
  • Converse All Stars have been around since 1917.  Take that Adidas and Nike.
  • Wilt Chamberlain was wearing All Stars during that game when he scored 100 points.
  • In the 60s, Converse were worn by 90% of pro and college basketball players.
  • Chuck Taylor never received a commission.  Can you imagine how much money he missed out on?
  • They weren't called "Chucks" until the 70s.
  • Converse sold $450 million in Chucks in 2012.
So my dear friend, tell that whippersnapper daughter of yours that she is just emulating her elders when she slips her Chucks on.  She probably dreams of dressing just like her mother....BAHAHA!!

As for me, I'll save MY mid-life crisis for something much grander...and MUCH more expensive...if I ever get old enough!

CameraShy Week 14 - Peephole

For this week's photo challenge, we were sent in pursuit of a "peephole".  Sometimes, I just overthink to the point of frustration.  Yes....that was this week.

As I searched for the elusive peephole, I photographed door peepholes, keyholes, flowers through various openings, through the openings in cans....    I just could not find anything I liked.  So I quit.   However, I DID take a lot of photos this week, so despite the fact that none of them involve a peephole in any form, I got lots of practice.  And THAT'S what this 52 week challenge is all about.

Finally, I just decided to have fun and ended up with a real, live PEEPhole!
This little PEEP is in hiding, and hoping to survive Easter without being discovered :)

Have a great week!

CameraShy - Week #12

This week's theme is SCORE.  My kids are waaaaay past their days of sporting events.  We're between seasons of my favorites....football and baseball.  There is snow on the ground, so I don't expect to see any kids out practicing their sport of choice.  I guess I'll just have to share my secret addiction....Bejeweled Blitz!!

SCORE
Full disclosure....I am NOT proud of the quality of this photo OR the score showing :)  Truth be told, I come from a very competitive family.  The photo is grainy, but I became consumed with playing.  It's hard to photograph yourself actively playing an electronic game!!  My goal was to capture an exploding gem.
This is a cell phone photo of my current leaderboard.  Yes...I am in SECOND and it's killing me.  However, my also competitive daughter is likewise addicted and is much better than me.  I credit her genes and the fact that she's much younger than me and, hence, has better eyesight and reaction time :)

March 20, 2014 ~ CameraShy

First, I have to say that this weekly challenge really can be quite a challenge!  It's forcing me to look at things around me in a different way.  This week's prompt is "Unlucky" and this is the toughest one yet.  I keep procrastinating, finally get ideas, go to post them, and find that someone else has posted a similar photo.  So, I decided to look at the word differently.

Every week I volunteer in my church's food pantry.  I started because I am recently retired and was looking for something meaningful to do.  I knew that people utilized food pantries, but I never really thought about those people.  As I started to meet our guests, I realized that all of the stereotypes in my head were completely wrong.  These are hard-working, caring people who have run into bad luck.  A job loss.  A health crisis.  A death in their family.  A divorce.  Something to tip the scale.  Simply being unlucky can change a life.

Imagine trying to feed yourself and a family with this.

And this.

  And this.

To sum it up, currently unlucky people depend on currently lucky people to share.  There is a flood of donations around Christmas.  But then people tend to go on with their lives and don't make a point to continue to donate.  Please....share your luck.  Find a food pantry near your home and donate some canned goods.  Your donation could turn someone's unlucky day into a lucky one.

March 16, 2014 ~ Songography

Happy St. Patrick's Day Eve!  Were you thinking "St. Patrick's Day" when you chose this song Kathy

It's Not Easy Being Green - sung by Kermit
green - adjective   of the color green; tending to preserve environmental quality (as by being recyclable, biodegradable, or nonpolluting)

It's gotta be tough being "green" when you're sucking in bus fumes and dodging speeding cabs on the streets of New York!

Week #10 - Angle

This was a PERFECT prompt for my week.  Happily, I spent the week in Manhattan.  There are angles everywhere!  Low angles to shoot those skyscrapers from, angles of streets, stairs, escalators...  It was a bit overwhelming, but in a good way.

After going through hundreds of photos that would have worked for "angle", this is the one that stands out.
Ironically, this Philly girl fell in love with the angles on a building that houses a restaurant that serves "Authentic Philly Steaks and Sandwiches". I guess it just felt like home to me!

March 5, 2014 CameraShy Take 52

Week #9 already...and I'm proud to say I am still 100% participating although all have not been here on my blog.  (I keep forgetting!)  This week's theme is "Root".  Half of the fun is thinking outside of the box, so I went a direction that caused great fear in my younger years.

Roots
Algebra, square roots, equations....these things would cause my stomach to clench, my brain to freeze, and to consider myself "just not good at math."  It never occurred to me that, perhaps, Math was never presented in a way my mind could grasp.
Interesting....a change in perspective!  I crave structure and pattern.  I'm glad to say that I CAN solve simple equations now.  But honestly, the only time I have ever used Algebra in real life is when my kids needed help in math...and they always went to their dad after consulting me just to check if I was actually right.

P.S. I believe anything Danica McKellar says.  After all, she was my favorite character, Winnie, in The Wonder Years, an Academic, an Author, and NOW I'll get to watch her in Dancing With The Stars!  Multi-talented, Intelligent & Gorgeous....triple-threat :)

Hazy Shades of Winter by The Bangles

...Seasons change with the scenery
Weaving time in a tapestry...
...Look around,
Leaves are brown,
There's a patch of snow on the ground.
Looking forward to the change from nature's sepia tones to full-blown color!

February 21, 2014 ~ Random 5 Friday

Late Bloomer ~ Amaryllis
1) I tend to see situations in black and white.  That does not mean want to see my surroundings in black and white.  I've decided THAT is the reason this winter is grating on me.  I NEED COLOR!
2) The Olympics make me happy.
3) I am reading A Widow For One Year by John Irving.  Not sure how I feel about it.  Have you read it?
4) Chocolate makes me happy.  I am way too happy lately!
5) Spiders....UGH.  One just crossed my path on my way to check to see if the basement is leaking.  I turned right around.  I hope he drowns.

Have a great weekend!  ~Karen

February 9, 2014 - Song-ography

Danielle Bradbery - My Day
"I always saw it coming
A little light behind the clouds
This is the start of something
My heart believes it now"

Slightly cropped, but otherwise unedited.  What you see if what you get! And I'm seeing the light of the sunshine after the recent ice storm and hoping this is the start of something...like maybe a stretch of warmer weather.  My heart WANTS to believe it, but the weatherman keeps telling me I'm dreaming.

Thanks for stopping by!  ~Karen

February 2, 2014 ~ Song-ography

Geez, Kathy...do you realize it's frigid out there??   And you pick The Proclaimers, I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)?!  Only for my sister will I bundle up and face the elements.

I've heard the song, but I don't think I've ever really listened to what it was saying. After reading the lyrics I came to the conclusion that it's pretty basic.  It sums up everything I feel about my husband...if you add "wo" in front of the word "man"!

Sometimes you have to brave the elements.  Sometimes everything isn't clear.  Sometimes there is a bend in the road.  Sometimes you feel off balance...

"But I would walk five hundred miles
And I would walk five hundred more
Just to be the (wo)man who walked a thousand miles
To fall down at your door"

Thanks for stopping by!  ~Karen

January 28, 2014 ~ CameraShy Week #4

Week #4 brings us "Creamy".  To add to this challenge, I must find something in my house because it is just too darn cold for me to bundle up and leave the warmth of my cozy cocoon.

Lunch time!!  I've been on a peanut butter kick lately.  I  never ate much of it as a kid, but I LOVE it now.

No grape jelly for me.  It has to be strawberry jelly....or sliced bananas....or strawberry jelly AND sliced bananas.  All of this photography made me hungry and I ate the banana before it made its way onto the sandwich.  Oh well.  As my Dad would say, "it all ends up in the same place!"

 A yummy, "creamy"  PB&J!

Which side of the great debate do you support...Creamy or Crunchy??

Join in on the fun~
