CameraShy - Week #12

This week's theme is SCORE.  My kids are waaaaay past their days of sporting events.  We're between seasons of my and baseball.  There is snow on the ground, so I don't expect to see any kids out practicing their sport of choice.  I guess I'll just have to share my secret addiction....Bejeweled Blitz!!

Full disclosure....I am NOT proud of the quality of this photo OR the score showing :)  Truth be told, I come from a very competitive family.  The photo is grainy, but I became consumed with playing.  It's hard to photograph yourself actively playing an electronic game!!  My goal was to capture an exploding gem.
This is a cell phone photo of my current leaderboard.  Yes...I am in SECOND and it's killing me.  However, my also competitive daughter is likewise addicted and is much better than me.  I credit her genes and the fact that she's much younger than me and, hence, has better eyesight and reaction time :)

March 20, 2014 ~ CameraShy

First, I have to say that this weekly challenge really can be quite a challenge!  It's forcing me to look at things around me in a different way.  This week's prompt is "Unlucky" and this is the toughest one yet.  I keep procrastinating, finally get ideas, go to post them, and find that someone else has posted a similar photo.  So, I decided to look at the word differently.

Every week I volunteer in my church's food pantry.  I started because I am recently retired and was looking for something meaningful to do.  I knew that people utilized food pantries, but I never really thought about those people.  As I started to meet our guests, I realized that all of the stereotypes in my head were completely wrong.  These are hard-working, caring people who have run into bad luck.  A job loss.  A health crisis.  A death in their family.  A divorce.  Something to tip the scale.  Simply being unlucky can change a life.

Imagine trying to feed yourself and a family with this.

And this.
  And this.

To sum it up, currently unlucky people depend on currently lucky people to share.  There is a flood of donations around Christmas.  But then people tend to go on with their lives and don't make a point to continue to donate.  Please....share your luck.  Find a food pantry near your home and donate some canned goods.  Your donation could turn someone's unlucky day into a lucky one.

March 16, 2014 ~ Songography

Happy St. Patrick's Day Eve!  Were you thinking "St. Patrick's Day" when you chose this song Kathy

It's Not Easy Being Green - sung by Kermit
green - adjective   of the color green; tending to preserve environmental quality (as by being recyclable, biodegradable, or nonpolluting)

It's gotta be tough being "green" when you're sucking in bus fumes and dodging speeding cabs on the streets of New York!

Week #10 - Angle
This was a PERFECT prompt for my week.  Happily, I spent the week in Manhattan.  There are angles everywhere!  Low angles to shoot those skyscrapers from, angles of streets, stairs, escalators...  It was a bit overwhelming, but in a good way.
After going through hundreds of photos that would have worked for "angle", this is the one that stands out.
Ironically, this Philly girl fell in love with the angles on a building that houses a restaurant that serves "Authentic Philly Steaks and Sandwiches". I guess it just felt like home to me!

March 5, 2014 CameraShy Take 52

Week #9 already...and I'm proud to say I am still 100% participating although all have not been here on my blog.  (I keep forgetting!)  This week's theme is "Root".  Half of the fun is thinking outside of the box, so I went a direction that caused great fear in my younger years.

Algebra, square roots, equations....these things would cause my stomach to clench, my brain to freeze, and to consider myself "just not good at math."  It never occurred to me that, perhaps, Math was never presented in a way my mind could grasp.
Interesting....a change in perspective!  I crave structure and pattern.  I'm glad to say that I CAN solve simple equations now.  But honestly, the only time I have ever used Algebra in real life is when my kids needed help in math...and they always went to their dad after consulting me just to check if I was actually right.

P.S. I believe anything Danica McKellar says.  After all, she was my favorite character, Winnie, in The Wonder Years, an Academic, an Author, and NOW I'll get to watch her in Dancing With The Stars!  Multi-talented, Intelligent & Gorgeous....triple-threat :)
